‘A System At Scale’
The form of the work displayed at Three Rooms Gallery was a 200 x 150 vinyl print of the stiched togther installation scans onto repurposed advertising foam board. The print was broken down again into separated strips and then mounted individually on the gallery wall. The three-dimensional profile of the mounted print allowed for the placement of a selection of objects depicted in the image, including a corroded SD card, CD ROM drive and portable-scanner software CD. The work was further modified to fit the space of the gallery, adapting to the bend in the wall and introducing a hole to fit the existing ligh switch which became integrated into the work.
Including images taken with a digital microscope at 70× enlargement of RGB cells in screens, digital prints and debris, the piece moves between micro and macro scales, combining low and high-resolution imagery relating to systems of public order (such as signage and emergency infrastructure) with glimpses into specialised systems usually hidden from view, like circuit boards and boiler cupboards. By layering and mixing these elements to the point of losing clear meaning, the work addresses the chaos and absurdity that can emerge when multiple systems of imposed order overlap and are serendipitously disrupted by human interference within the public sphere.
